For this assignment you will be using your initials to create nine 4 x 4 compositions. Your compositions may be black & white or color and you must only use typography as a design element. To complete this assignment you may choose any font you wish*. The font you choose, must be use for all nine compositions.


You will create one composition for each of the following:

  • Dynamic composition
  • Static composition
  • Symmetry
  • Asymmetry
  • Scale
  • Tension
  • Balance
  • Grids
  • The Figure ground effect

Your Final compositions will be printed individually, trimmed and  laid out in a square grid format  using one sheet of black 13 x 19 paper, trimmed to a roughly 13 x 13 inch square. ( see image bellow for layout)

Step 1.

Start by typing your initials into an illustrator document, in upper and lower case (you may use either) . Try out Several different type face options, see which ones resonate with you and work well with your initials. Review the Principles of Form & Design. (click link to download)

Step 2.

Once you have a few different typeface options your are happy with, grab a pencil and sketch pad and make thumbnail sketches. The thumbnail sketches can by 3″x 3″ or 4″ x 4″ you must complete at least 27 sketches, 3 for each composition.

Due next class, Tuesday September 6th

Step 3.

Begin working in Adobe Illustrator, building on your strongest concepts from your sketches. Prepare for in-class review Tuesday September 13th.

Step 4.

Print out your working concepts and hang them on white boards for an informal in-class review Tuesday .

Step 5.

Print out your 9 final compositions, trim them and mount them on black paper before class on Thursday September 22nd for an in class critique.
